Wagner Road Early Childhood Centre and Kindergarten earns Excellent rating

Wagner Road Early Childhood Centre and Kindergarten (ECC&K) has been awarded the Excellent rating from the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

The rating, the highest achievable under the National Quality Framework, was awarded for the service’s commitment to respecting and celebrating diversity and their development of collaborative partnerships that enhance children’s learning.

To ensure children have an understanding of indigenous culture educators partnered with Uncle Joe Kirk, a local Aboriginal elder. Wagner Road ECC&K and Uncle Joe have worked together for over five years on many projects, including the development of a yarning circle in the service’s outdoor area and publishing Uncle Joe’s own stories that have also been used in other local education and care services.

ACECQA Chief Executive Officer Karen Curtis congratulated the service based in Clayfield, Brisbane, on this outstanding achievement.

“I applaud Wagner Road Early Childhood Centre and Kindergarten for its efforts in building a relationship with their local Aboriginal community and the educational outcomes for children that have resulted,” Ms Curtis said.

Wagner Road ECC&K was also commended for their role in co-founding Brisbane Inner North Early Years, an organisation where local educators meet to discuss methods to support transitions for children. By sharing practice, Wagner Road ECC&K has played a key role in improving children’s learning at services throughout their community.

Educators at Wagner Road ECC&K have also published articles and presented at local workshops on using technology for colleagues in the early education and care sector.

“The role of Wagner Road Early Childhood Centre and Kindergarten as an educational leader in their community means their positive impact extends beyond children in their own service,” Ms Curtis said.

Services that receive an overall rating of ‘Exceeding the National Quality Standard’ can apply for the Excellent rating.
